Comfortable Dress Shoes for Women Wide at the Toes
If you're someone that lives in a cycle of buying and returning ill-fitting shoes as a result of having wider feet, you're not alone.
For many women with wide feet, regular sizes are not enough to provide ample comfort and support. And while many trendy shoes target mainstream sizes, many footwear designers are introducing a more expansive range of styles to their lineups than ever before.
To help remedy your shoe shopping journey, Shop TODAY talked to a podiatrist to weigh in on common issues for those with wide feet. We've also found many wide-width shoes for women that are stylish, roomy and won't cramp up your tootsies.
How can you tell if you have wide feet?
According to Dr. Najwa Javed of California's Silicon Valley Podiatry Group, the best way to know the size and width of your feet is to get measured by a shoe fitting expert or try a foot measuring device at a shoe store.
"For the exact size and width, you can also trace your foot on a piece of paper and then place your shoe over the trace and see if you have adequate room," she added.
What should you look for when buying dress shoes for wide feet?
Javed recommends making sure your shoes feature a good heel counter of at least one inch. "This will ensure that the foot is in an elevated position which reduces the widening of the sole of foot." She also suggested searching for footwear with a square toe box it inherently helps with adding more space around the front of the shoe.
"Next, always buy shoes where the upper material can stretch easily or is already made of a stretchable material," she shared. Genuine leather, suede, mesh and canvas uppers are a few common materials that provide a more stretchy experience.
Two of the most common shoe styles for women with wide feet are clogs and mules with heels, but Javed suggests avoiding these trends.
"Interesting heel styles can cause the pressure distribution to be altered and can lead to a painful ball of the foot," she said. "An elongated pointed toe...gives an illusion that there is much more space in the shoe, but actually, its extreme point starts from the proximal toe box causing cramping of the metatarsals."
